The Ichesa AMCOS coffee processing unit, built in 2012, serves some 179 local smallholder farmers, each with less than one hectare of land on average. Several varieties of coffee are grown in the area, including Bourbon and its derivatives. Producers deliver their cherries to the station, where they are processed with a Penagos pulper and sorted into wash channels before a 10-12 hour fermentation. This cooperative supports local farmers by providing shade trees and inputs to improve soil quality and coffee storage. Tanzanian micro-lots are traceable to the washing station and are selected for cup quality. Given the small size of the farms, many producers are members of AMCOS, which facilitates the delivery and processing of the cherries. Fully washed Tanzanian coffee undergoes fermentation, while washed coffee is mechanically milled. The fully washed batches are processed on the day of harvest and fermented before being washed and dried. This batch includes several varieties indigenous to Tanzania, such as Blue Mountain, Bourbon, Kilimanjaro and Luwiro. Tanzania has a long history of involvement with coffee, especially among the Haya people. German settlers introduced commercial cultivation of Arabica coffee, which expanded over time. After independence, farmers' cooperatives were formed to improve market access, although international success for Tanzanian coffee was slow in coming. Cafe Imports has begun to explore micro-lots and farm-specific lots in Tanzania for high-quality coffees. Although most Tanzanian coffee is bought for quality and cup profile, Cafe Imports seeks to offer the best Tanzanian coffees to the world. In short, Ichesa AMCOS is a smallholder cooperative in Tanzania that processes high quality coffee, with a focus on traceability and improving coffee quality. The history of coffee in Tanzania is rich and diverse, and Cafe Imports seeks to offer the best of this region to the international market.
