At Café Barsel, we've dedicated nearly three decades to one thing: creating coffee culture. From our beginnings in 1996 to our definitive leap into the world of specialty coffee in 2013, we've been committed to every single cup. That's why today we want to tell you more than just a simple comparison: we're going to delve into the universe of Americano and Espresso , two iconic styles that, although they share the same origin, evoke very different sensations.
What is an espresso and why is it so special?
Espresso , that small but powerful cup that revolutionized the world, has deep Italian roots. Its story begins in 1901, when Luigi Bezzera developed the first machine capable of quickly brewing coffee using pressure. Thus was born an intense, full-bodied beverage with a crema on top and a power that is not only physical but also emotional.
At Café Barsel, when we talk about espresso, we're also talking about technique, precision, and respect for the bean. Because every extraction we make comes from carefully selected coffees, hand-roasted in our facilities and treated with the care that only a passionate, family-run business can offer.
Americano Coffee: Smoothness with History
The story of Americano coffee is almost an anecdote with a soul. During World War II, American soldiers in Italy found espresso too strong. They asked for it to be diluted with hot water, and thus Americano coffee was born. A lighter blend, ideal for those who enjoy coffee without the intensity of espresso, but with that characteristic flavor.
Today, the Americano is a highly valued option, especially in specialty coffee shops like ours, where we always prepare it starting with a perfect espresso. Only in this way can we ensure that, even with added water, the drink retains its complexity and nuances.
Differences in preparation: technique vs ritual
Although both espresso and Americano share a starting point, their preparation changes radically:
-
Espresso is made by forcing hot water at high pressure through finely ground coffee in about 25-30 seconds. The result is a concentrated beverage of about 30 ml.
-
The Americano is prepared by adding between 120 and 200 ml of hot water to the espresso, resulting in a longer and smoother drink.
Both styles require attention. At Café Barsel, we teach our customers how to master these preparations, either through our in-person training sessions or educational content. Because for us, making a good coffee is much more than just pressing a button.
Taste and sensations: intensity versus delicacy
This is where the real differences between American coffee and espresso become apparent:
-
Espresso offers a powerful punch of flavor, a rich body, and a lingering aftertaste. Ideal for those seeking a short but intense experience.
-
The Americano softens that intensity, making it perfect to enjoy in long sips, during a chat, while reading, or on a work morning.
At Café Barsel, we believe there's no such thing as a "better" coffee, but rather the perfect coffee for every moment. That's why we roast each origin individually and carefully manage traceability from the farmer to your cup.
Specialty Coffee: the key to enjoying both
Both espresso and Americano reach their full potential when made with quality coffee. And that's where our commitment comes in. For years we've worked directly with coffee farmers, eliminating intermediaries and ensuring that the value stays at the source. This not only improves the lives of the producers but also the quality of the beans we receive.
Furthermore, our 2030 project, focused on sustainability, drives us to innovate at every stage of the process: from recyclable metal packaging to roasters that reduce emissions and consume less energy. Because caring for the planet is also part of the taste of coffee.
Which one do you prefer?
Espresso and Americano are two sides of the same passion. At Café Barsel, we experience them every day, whether calibrating our machines, tasting new origins, or sharing a cup with our customers. The important thing isn't choosing one over the other, but discovering which one best suits your moment.
So the next time you're wondering whether to order an espresso or an Americano, think about what you need. Immediate intensity or a lingering pause? Either way, make it with good coffee. Make it with soul. Make it with Café Barsel .
